Class Descriptions
Teaching Basic Tap Technique: This class will explore how to teach beginners! How do you break down a flap in a way that makes sense to someone who hasn’t found the looseness in their ankles that is required? What are the most important things to be teaching in a beginners’ class? These questions and more will be addressed in this hour!
Basics of Music Theory: Tap dance is more than just dance; it is music! In order to be effective musicians, it is important that we understand at least the basics of music theory. This class will make sure that participants leave with a basic understanding of notes, time signatures, syncopation, and song structure.
3/4 Time with 5 Year Olds: This class will explore ways to approach different time signatures with dancers of all ages and abilities. Those weird time signatures aren’t just for advanced tap dancers! Learn how to incorporate that 3/4 or 5/4 time into your younger classes in easy and fun ways!
Teaching Advanced Tap Technique: This class will explore teaching advanced level tap dancers. In this class, participants will explore ways to teach tricks and more advanced tap techniques like Loose Ankle Technique.
Tap as a Full Body Expression: Often times, tap dancers focus so much time on the feet that they forget to spend time on their upper body and arms. How do we as teachers ensure that our tap dancers are using their full bodies to make music and not just their feet? This class will answer that question.
Teaching Tap Online: Haven't quite found your groove when teaching classes online? Looking for ways to improve the quality of the video and audio? Wanting to mix up your online classes and implement other fun elements? This class will show you how to navigate the world of online teaching and make your classes more efficient and fun!
Preparing Tappers for the Professional World: Learn from former Rockette Denise Caston-Clark what it takes to make it in the professional world of tap. Participants will learn how to ensure that their dancers are on the proper trajectory to be successful at the professional level should they choose to pursue that path. Additionally, participants will learn how to make sure that their classes are geared toward building professional level tap dancers who are prepared for more than just the competition stage.
Tap History: Tap Dance is one of the only truly American art forms and its history is rich and entangled with much of American culture. It is so important to know where our art form came from in order for us to pass that information on to the next generations of dancers.
Preparing Tap for Competition: Frustrated that your tap small group (that you know is awesome) just isn’t scoring well at competition? This class will explore with participants finding the right balance between a more professional, concert level of tap and the competition world.
Acting Exercises for Dancers: Teaching dancers to perform is probably the hardest aspect of teaching dance. This class will explore aspects of the Stanislavsky Method of Acting that can be used to help dancers find a more natural element to their performance.
Choreographing Tap: Good choreography can make or break a tap routine on both the competition stage and the professional stage. Choreographing tap dance is about more than putting steps together. In this class, participants will learn how to build choreography that compliments the chosen music and that is artistic, dynamic, and intriguing to the audience.
Building an Effective Curriculum: Using pedagogical and educational methods, participants will learn how to build a curriculum that is engaging to dancers of all levels within one class.
